Lameness Evaluation

Lameness is the most frequent cause of reduced performance and loss of use in almost every type of horse.

A lameness investigation will usually begin with a full orthopedic examination and gait analysis at walk and trot. Flexion tests are performed along with peripheral nerve blocks (if needed) in order to pinpoint the source of the lameness.

After this initial diagnosis, imaging including radiography and/or ultrasound may be used to achieve a more specific diagnosis. We will then discuss the best treatment options with the owner.

At Equine Planet our treatment options are:

  • Joint medication using Corticosteroids, Hyaluronic acid or Ozone
  • Systemic medications
  • Phytotherapy
  • Regenerative medicine with PRP (Platelet-rich plasma) for muscles, ligaments and tendons
  • Stem cell therapy

We also work with many expert local remedial farriers and physiotherapists, and/or are happy to discuss problems with technicians of our client’s choice.
